Fees

Fees

Proofreading: 1¢ per word. This is the maximum fee. If there are not many changes to be made, a lesser fee will be billed at the proofreader’s discretion. There is a $25 minimum fee (or $15 for students) for this service.

Proofreading and Copy Editing: 1.5¢ per word. This is the maximum fee. If there are not many changes or revisions to be made, a lesser fee will be billed at the copy editor’s discretion. There is a $30 minimum fee (or $20 for students) for this service.

Proofreading and Editing: This fee is negotiable depending upon the amount of work required. The full draft of the document must be submitted and we can discuss the parameters of the job. A flat rate will then be quoted and approved by the author before editing work commences. The flat rate is usually based upon 2¢ per word, unless the project requires extensive work. There is a $35 minimum fee for this service.

Writing: This fee is negotiable depending upon the amount of work required. Generally, we will calculate the fee based upon a $45/hour rate. We will then estimate the time involved and issue a flat-rate quote. If we complete the job in less time than anticipated, we will only bill for the time actually taken to complete the job. If we underestimate the job, we will not bill for more than the initial amount quoted. There is a $90 two hour minimum fee for this service.

Second Opinion: Generally, there is a 1/2¢ per word fee for this service and it is calculated on the entire word count of the document. Some comments made by previous editors need to be read in context of the document as a whole. Our editor will use discretion in billing for this service; if the comment in question can stand alone and does not require extensive reading or contemplation by our editor, then we will bill accordingly. There will, however, be a minimum fee of $45 for this service.

Fees for Rush Services: Generally, we do not accept “rush jobs.” Rushing through an assignment means that mistakes might be overlooked and your work deserves our full attention. Turnaround time depends upon the extent of the job. Our usual turnaround time is very quick and can be as short as the same day if the job is not extensive. Proofing and editing a 400 page novel obviously cannot be done in one day.

We will provide a return date upon acceptance of the job and promise to have the work finished by that date, or it is free.* If you desire a sooner return date and we can provide the work in that shortened time frame, we will add a  surcharge for earlier delivery. This fee will be set forth in a confirming email and work will not commence until an agreement is reached as to the additional surcharge.

*Exclusions Apply to Free Service: If we are unable to provide the work in the time frame promised, it will be free unless circumstances beyond our control prevent us from meeting the deadline. Such circumstances include, but are not limited to: acts of nature such as earthquakes or floods; power outages; server crashes or instances of being offline; hard drive crashes; or failure of the client to respond to and provide requested information in a timely manner.

Invoices: When the job is complete, an invoice will be emailed to you. Once we receive confirmation from PayPal that the invoice has been paid, we will email the completed project to you. Some exceptions to this prepayment rule may be made for long-standing clients, government agencies and large corporate clients.

Hard Copies: Some customers may wish to mail a hard copy to us and have the proofing and editing marks made directly to that hard copy. The fees for this service are the same, but will also include a return postage charge. Upon receipt of payment, the completed project will be returned to you via the carrier of your choice. If you wish to utilize hard copies, please send an email to us advising of mailed submissions. We will make telephone or email arrangements for the services desired.

Retainer Fees: If an estimate for a job exceeds $500, we require a 50 percent retainer fee before commencing the assignment. If the job is cancelled before completion, the retainer fee will be forfeited to Tantamount. If less than 50 percent of the job has been completed at the time we receive the kill notice, a partial refund of the retainer will be made upon the editor’s discretion. There will be no refund if more than 50 percent of the work has been done by Tantamount editors and proofreaders at the time we receive the kill notice.
